WEBSITE EVALUATION: DAVE'S ESL CAFE!

Hi Everyone,
This week, I have evaluated Dave’s ESL Cafe for our assignment. This website is related to teaching and learning English. On its home page you can see the purpose of this website in this motto “The Internet’s Meeting place for ESL+ EFL Teachers + students from around the world”. So, it is a good place to get together with teachers and students. The website, which has been in existence since 1995, has slowly grown to be one of the largest resources for ELT. As you can see from the name and it also writes on the website, it is maintained by the one and only Dave Sperling who has a BA in Psychology from Pepperdine University, and an MA in Applied Linguistics from California State University. You can reach more detailed information about Dave on website or from interviews.

The home page includes general listing, a drop down menu and at the bottom of the page you can see when the site has last been updated, 2017. The website consists of stuff for teachers, students and everyone parts. For students, this site provides grammar lessons and quizzes on variety of topics suited to intermediate and high school students. Also, it includes several useful pages about English slang words, idioms, and phrasal verbs. Students can connect with other students in the Student Discussion Forums that cover a wide range of topics. It is good for students who wish to practice their English skills. Besides, through “HelpCenter” students get their questions answered. For teachers, there is a “Idea Cookbook” page that offers useful teaching tips on classroom management. There is also a Teacher Discussion Forum where educators can collaborate and discuss. As well, the site has an ESL Job Center for teachers looking for an ESL position or are interested in working abroad.

Generally, this site is a useful resource for teachers and students but there are some shortcomings. You should careful about informations as sometimes they are based on opinions not facts and it is administered by many people in its discussion forums. The site has a large amount of data, it may take some time to looking for information. Also, some links and the phrasal verbs and idioms have not been updated much for the last few years, so it is out of touch with current developments and some links are not checked, they are broken links. Although this site has a variety of light-colored backgrounds, graphics are few and images, excluding Dave’ photo galleries, are almost none.
Overall, Dave’s ESL Cafe is very friendly and educatory site. I recommend it to teachers, because it offers many lesson-planning materials, job posting and discussion forums. Thus, educators can take advantage of this useful site in many ways. Besides, they can benefit from Dave’s advice, he is a really expert and the helper of teachers in designing lessons.

You can visit the website here.

Thank you, Hande N.
